Kenya needs professional musicians, designers, coaches, athletes and creative directors. The Arts and Sports Science pathway is the formal training route for those careers. Yet it remains the most dismissed of the three CBE senior school pathways. That dismissal costs talented learners three years of the wrong education.
What the Pathway Actually Covers
The Arts and Sports Science pathway develops practical skill alongside theoretical knowledge across three years of senior school. It is not a soft option. A learner who chooses it without genuine talent and commitment will struggle just as much as a learner who chooses STEM without a foundation in Mathematics.
The pathway sits alongside STEM and Social Sciences as an equal option under Kenya's CBE structure. Every pathway leads to university, TVET or professional training. The difference is the direction, not the value.
Kenya's CBE senior school offers STEM, Social Sciences and Arts and Sports Science. Every learner chooses one pathway at the start of Grade 10 based on KJSEA performance, SBA records and genuine strengths. No pathway outranks another. Each leads to a distinct set of careers.
Subjects in the Arts and Sports Science Pathway

| Subject Type | Subjects |
|---|---|
| Core subjects (all pathways) | English, Kiswahili, Life Skills and Values, Physical Education |
| Pathway subjects | Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Music |
| Optional subjects | Physical Education and Sports Science, Home Science, Computer Studies, Religious Education |
The practical component is significantly higher than in STEM or Social Sciences. Learners spend time in studios, rehearsal spaces, workshops and sports facilities. Assessment includes portfolios, performances, exhibitions and practical demonstrations alongside written work.

Who This Pathway Is Built For
The right candidate has demonstrated consistent talent in Creative Arts and Sports across Grades 7, 8 and 9. That learning area is assessed throughout junior secondary. A learner who has been at ME or above in Creative Arts and who has a clear interest in at least one career above is the natural fit.
Check the School Before You Choose
Not every senior secondary school in Kenya offers this pathway properly. Schools need specialist teachers, studios, music rooms, sports facilities and equipment. Before selecting a school, confirm that it has qualified teachers and functioning facilities for the specific subjects your child wants to study.
A school that lists Arts and Sports Science as available but has no music teacher, no art studio and no sports science programme is not delivering the pathway. Ask specific questions during school visits. Ask which subjects are actively taught, how many learners are currently enrolled in the pathway and what the assessment record looks like.
How Placement Into This Pathway Works
Pathway placement follows the same 60/20/20 formula used for all senior school selection. KJSEA counts for 60 percent, SBA across Grades 7 to 9 counts for 20 percent and the national non-examined assessment counts for 20 percent. A learner does not need the highest KJSEA score to access this pathway, but they do need a score that qualifies them for a school that actually delivers it well.

A Pathway Kenya Actually Needs
Kenya's creative economy is growing. The film industry, music sector, design industry and sports sector all need trained professionals. The Arts and Sports Science pathway is the formal route into those careers. Choose it because your child has genuine talent and passion in this direction. That is not a lesser choice. It is the right one for the right learner.
