When your child enters Grade 10, they are no longer studying everything. They choose one of three pathways and that choice shapes the subjects they study, the university courses available to them, and the careers they can pursue. Here is what each pathway actually involves.

The Three Pathways

Kenya's CBE senior school system organises Grade 10 to 12 around three distinct pathways. Each pathway has its own subject combinations, minimum placement score requirement, and career destinations. A learner cannot switch pathways once placed without a formal appeal process.

Career destinations include professional sports, sports science, music production, film and media, graphic design, fashion design, architecture and performing arts.

How to Choose the Right Pathway

Look at which KJSEA learning areas your child scored highest in — those subjects indicate natural pathway alignment
Ask your child what they enjoy doing, not just what they are good at — three years requires genuine interest
Check the minimum score requirement before submitting preferences
Speak to the class teacher — they have the most accurate picture of where your child's strengths lie

The Bottom Line

Three pathways. One choice. It shapes three years of senior school and the university courses your child can access. Choose based on demonstrated strength, genuine interest and career direction — in that order. The right pathway is the one your child will show up for every day.
